Support sought for South Asia media university

The CJMC building in Kathmandu

The College of Journalism and Mass Communication (CJMC) in Nepal is seeking help from established universities and media organizations around the world in order to help it transform into the Nepal University of Mass Communication.

The college wants to become the first university of mass communication in the South Asia region.

Dr Manju Mishra, the founding principal of the CJMC, wants financial aid to buy land, create a purpose-built university and move the learning and training currently offered by the CJMC to a new level.

“We believe the country needs young people who combine all the skills of a modern journalist with an awareness of the social issues which confront their country.

Young men and women who can play a major role, through the media, in making the people aware of the issues and possibilities that confront them”, Dr Mishra said.

The aim is to offer South Asia a new resource targeted at ensuring media excellence and benefitting thousands of new, professional media practitioners throughout the region.

According to Dr. Mishra, efforts to complete all the legal processes needed to recognise the proposed university, including permission from the Nepalese Ministry of Education and Sports, are underway.

"If this university comes into existence on Nepalese soil, it could become one of the best forums for media excellence in the whole South Asia region".

The CJMC was launched in January 2002 and has already earned the distinction of being a pioneering college in the small Himalayan country offering master’s level classes for media students.

The writer, TP Mishra, is a student at the CJMC studying for a  Bachelor’s degree in Media Technology
