Media law "undermines free expression"

Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan   - from Wikipedia, reproduced under the creative commonsHuman Rights Watch (HRW) says a pending law in the UAE would "muzzle" the media and prevent honest reporting. HRW says it would grant the government virtually complete control in deciding who is allowed to work as a journalist and which media organizations are allowed to operate in the country. The organisation says more than 100 leading Emirati academics, journalists, lawyers, and human rights activists have expressed concern.

News agency office closed in Iran

journalists protest against sanctionsThe authorities in Iran have closed the office of the Association of Iranian Journalists and arrested three more journalists. The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) says there are currently 37 journalists imprisoned. The Iranian authorities say those detained have been responsible for instability; the CPJ says it's an attempt to silence critical voices. Zafar Iqbal reports.
