Geoffrey Robertson speaking at the IPI Top Media Forum

Speaking at IPI’s Top Media Forum in Vienna last night, Mr. Robertson QC (Queen’s Counsel) provided a candid assessment of the state of freedom of expression worldwide and of the role of the United Nations (UN) in protecting that right.

"The two rights that the UN can do absolutely nothing about and does nothing about: the right to democracy and the right to free speech. Why? Because half its members are undemocratic and because more than half its members curb free speech," Mr. Robertson stated.

"We hope the stories told in this campaign will sound the alarm, and encourage those with the power to take action to do so," said IPI Director David Dadge.

The campaign highlights the cases of 10 journalists from different regions of the world who have been silenced by imprisonment or physical attack, including murder. For them, justice has failed, and they are either serving unjust prison sentences, or their attackers are benefiting from impunity. More...

IPI Justice Denied Campaign Calls for Justice for Journalists Worldwide

ipi_jd_logo_small_image.jpg (11 KB)

Justice remains elusive for journalists who report openly. Some face the ultimate sanction, murdered for what they have written. The perpetrators all too often remain at large. Others are subjected to harassment disguised as law enforcement and languish in prison, convicted of crimes such as insulting a nation’s reputation or divulging state secrets.

IPI’s Justice Denied Campaign seeks to change this reality.

93 Reasons Why Journalism Remains a Dangerous Profession
With 93 journalists killed, 2007 was the second deadliest year for journalists in modern history, with only marginally fewer killed this year than last. Iraq proved again to be the most hazardous place to report, with almost half this year’s Death Watch total killed while covering the ongoing conflict. In Somalia, another conflict zone, eight journalists were killed in 2007, and Pakistan, the Philippines and Sri Lanka were also highly dangerous.

The IPI World Press Freedom Review 2007 is the Institute’s annual review of press freedom in over 140 countries around the world.
