Somaliweyn Radio reporter, Mohamed Abdikadir Al-Bashir, has been released on bail after a month in an underground cell in the Somali national parliament. On his release he said the experience had strengthened his resolve to resist intimidation and carry on his work as a journalist. He urged other journalists to remain strong and do the same. The director of Somaliweyn Radio, Abdirahman Mohamed Hassan "Hudeyfi", has been released from custody after two weeks imprisonment in Mogadishu. Hudeyfi was arrested after contacting the authorities following the detainment of one of his reporters, Bashir Mohammed Abdulkadir, who is still being held by government security forces. Reporters Without Borders is continuing to call for the release of the Somaliweyn Radio reporter. Samme Bogat reports. |

Radio Somaliweyn has signed an agreement with Swedish Radio International, which will lead to the Swedish English language service being rebroadcast in Mogadishu, Somalia. In return, Radio Somaliweyn is hoping for capacity building help as they seek to strengthen their media business. The agreement comes as Reporters Without Borders continues to call for the release of the manager of the privately-owned radio station, Abdirahman Mohamed Hudeyfi, and one of his journalists, Bashir Mohammed Abdulkadir, who were arrested by government forces on 14 January. Radio Somaliweyn staff say journalists are working in constant fear and oppression. Samme Bogad reports. |
