Media Helping Media - a free, global resource for media development

A group representing journalist in the tribal areas of Pakistan is seeking funds and support for a capacity building programme in the region aimed at improving the quality of journalism and equipping journalists with the tools they need to function effectively. The group wants to take the training into conflict areas and reach tribal and semi-tribal journalists. Kashif Hameed reports from Pakistan.

Journalists in the Bhutanese refugee camps in Nepal are facing a financial crisis. Local laws say they can't charge for the newspapers they produce and even if they could sell them the refugee population couldn't afford to buy them. Now, according to journalist T.P. Mishra, some of the organisations that have helped the refugee journalists in the past are ending their support.

Citizen journalism cannot replace mainstream media, but, where journalists are under threat and free media is disappearing, it enables people to make their voices heard, bear witness and play an active role in disseminating news and information. Sanjana Hattotuwa sets out how citizen journalism in Sri Lanka is changing the way people interact with those who have so far controlled their lives.
