Shantiram AcharyaThe whereabouts of Shantiram Acharya, who, it’s claimed, has been working as a reporter for a number of newspapers operating in the Bhutanese refugee camps in Nepal, is still unknown.

Acharya was arrested on January 16, 2007, on the charge of being a Maoist militant. His case was initially reported eight days later on January 24 by Kuensel, the state-owned website.

The Bhutan Chapter of Third World Media Network (TWMN) investigated and filed a report on  Media Helping Media expressing deep concern about Acharya’s arrest and disappearance.

Devi Acharya, a brother of the missing journalist, says the only hope is for international human rights organisations to probe his brother’s detention.

Speaking by telephone with a TWMN-Bhutan representative, Devi Acharya said the family feared for Shantiram Acharya's safety.

“The state terrorizing situation inside Bhutan is extremely risky. I do not know whether my brother is inside a cruel Bhutanese jail or even whether he is still alive.”

The Communist Party of Bhutan (CPB-MLM) has already stated that Shantiram Acharya was not affiliated to their party.

TWMN-Bhutan called on international media freedom and human rights groups to investigate further.

As a journalist I understand the importance of facts. Although this is an outdated discussion I still want to make sure some facts are correct. Kuensel is not a "state owned website". But rather it belongs to Bhutan's first newspaper. Although it was initially started by the government it was later granted autonomy as a corporation. According to my research,it continues to pay for operations through donor funding, advertisements and other printing services. It does not receive any funding from the Bhutanese government nor is it a line item in the government's budget.

Secondly, the story should elaborate more about who Acharya was working for - which papers exactly? Was he a full time reporter or a freelancer? Why are there no interviews or comments from his employers? If he is a journalist then us as reporters and human beings need to stand up and ask for his release.

However, if he is a miscreant creating trouble in a peaceful country we should not allow our profession to be hijacked so people like him can use it as a cover to to damage and harm to others.

The refugee issue is a delicate one. In it's media, Nepal continues to blame Thimphu for dragging its feet. Bhutan, on its part, blames the constant political instability of Nepal for the lack of decisions.

The refugees says they were forcefully evicted from Bhutan, the Bhutanese government says they left on their own accord despite the King making personal visits and pleas to each majority Nepali village. In the end the people of both countries suffer, long ties of friendship are broken. As journalists we need to do our jobs and check our facts and not promote propaganda - God knows there is enough of that.
Another ploy of the Nepalese to gain world sympathy
written by sonam , June 24 2007
Just as the disgruntled Bhutanese some legal others Illegal Nepalese who had settled in Bhutan have been quite successful at duping the world into thinking that their cause against Bhutan is for want of Democracy, they are now using this ploy - kidnapped or missing journalist- to get world sympathy on someone who has probably been apprehended for carrying out criminal acts against Bhutan.
The people who are promoting this cause AGAINST Bhutan have been misusing EVERY aspect of Free speech and Democracy to further their own agenda which is nothing but want for GREATER NEPAL. They have destroyed Sikkim, destroyed Darjeeling and Kalimpong, destroyed their own country and now they want to destroy Bhutan.

The world media should conduct a thorough investigation before they get fooled by the ploy of these people. If you get Democracy you will be the most corrupt people in the world. You know nothing but violence, no nothing but not to be satisfied, no nothing but to make trouble and spin lies, no nothing but to be judgemental of other countries but your own.

Why delay
written by Pin Marks , April 10 2007

i don't think the report is trying to defame Bhutan but trying to mend his way to respect the freedom of the press.
Getting risky
written by Guest , April 08 2007
Mr. Acharya's case seems risky. International rights bodies should probe into his whereabouts without a delay.
Writer seems correct...

Acharya's whereabouts seems more sensible. All concerned authorities must extend their fullest support for his early release.... Thomas
Mishra is right
written by Guest , April 08 2007
Mr. Mishra's news story and comments seems true. It is no doubt that Bhutanese regime is practicing silent state terrorism since decades. Acharya must be helped to get released at the earliest.

It seems that the Guest who are posted this "was he really a journalist? A journalist never sneak into another country without permission or visa. Here is his story in bhutanese newspaper: http://www.kuenselonline.com/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=7997" must be from inside Bhutan who has been always supporting the absolutism of Bhutanese regime. And the link he has mentioned is of state-owned online version.
No biasness
written by thakurmishra , April 08 2007
It has to be noted here that Mr. Acharya was arrested in Bhutan not in Nepal. However, he was residing in Bhutanese refugee camp in Nepal. It would be more clear to understand this news story if referred to the previously posted.
Good to know that he is arrested. A jour

What if he is a member of moist in Nepal as he confessed to be? Your article is just bias and clearly indicates the motive of defaming Bhutan.
