About Media Helping Media Print E-mail
Thursday, 19 October 2006

Media Helping Media (MHM) has been set up to provide a platform for those involved in the media in transition states, post-conflict countries and areas where freedom of expression and media freedom is under threat.

Balance

Some articles will be contributed by registered members of MHM who are active in media freedom and human rights organisations and, as such, may not offer both sides of an issue and may not be balanced.

Other articles will be written by journalist or media leaders who claim to be under threat and who make no attempt to offer balance or impartiality in the pieces they submit.

MHM doesn't seek to achieve balance on their behalf.

If anyone feels there is imblance and a significant perspective is being left out, they are free to add comments, post in the forum, or register and then contact us requesting 'author status' so that they can put the other side.

Discussion forum

The MHM discussion forum is a place where all registered members can post about these issues and where those involved in media development can discuss issues and ideas. This is another place where balance can be offered.

Registered members can also post links to stories about where freedom of the media is under threat and add comments to the articles on the site.

Registration

Registration is free and once approved, a new member can apply to be an 'author' and gain access to the site's content management system, which will enable them to upload articles and images to the site for consideration and approval.

Authors

The site now has volunteer authors on every continent and all the articles published on MHM have either been written for the site or have been published elsewhere and submitted for republication on MHM.

Front page articles will update only when fresh news is uploaded by one of the site's many authors.

News feeds

You can set an RSS feed for the latest news stories posted on the site so that you are alerted when fresh content has been added.

MHM also displays a list of news and blog feeds which are automated at the bottom of most pages on the site. These feeds are not selected or endorsed by MHM, but are there to offer a sample of the information being published at any one time.

Copyright

Media organisations are welcome to reuse any article published on MHM as long as they mention the name of the site and provide a link back to MHM. The only exception is where there is a note at the foot of the article stating that the correspondent's permission to republish is required.

Alerts

MHM sends out alerts to all registered members whenever an article is submitted that we feel deserves wider attention. If you don't want to receive these alerts, please let us know by using the contact us form accessed by the link at the foot of every page.

Finances

Media Helping Media has no sponsors or funders and we do not take advertising. The costs are small and carried by the volunteers who manage the site.

MHM team

Media Helping Media was built and is maintained and updated by David Brewer from a concept worked out with Bob Eggington and further developed alongside Claus Sølvsteen and Patrice Schneider. All are journalists involved in international media development.

Technical

The site was built by David Brewer with help from the Joomla open-source community. In particular the site would like to thank Dean Marshall , a professional internet consultant, who always went the extra mile helping sort out template and layout issues, donating his time to the project free of charge. Bill Seddon at Lyquidity Solutions also offered extremely helpful support and advice when we introduced MediaWiki on the site.
