free training resourcesThis site now has 20 media training resources which registered users of MHM can download free of charge.

The training modules are designed to assist all involved in helping build strong, sustainable, independent media in countries where freedom of expression is under threat.

Ten have been donated by users of this site; the others have been authored by the MHM team. More modules are being edited and will be added over the coming months.

There are three categories…

The media ethics category looks at issues such as:

  • accuracy
  • impartiality
  • fairness
  • privacy

More are being added, covering offence, integrity and interactivity.

The media training category is mainly for traditional media organisations moving to new media platforms, such as the web and mobile, although most of the modules work for all media outlets. They explore issues such as:

  • starting in online journalism
  • managing a news website
  • running a news meeting
  • forward planning
  • issue-led journalism
  • creating a station sound - Philip Hilton

The content in the investigative journalism category has been contributed by registered users of this site and includes:

  • planning your investigation - Don Ray
  • tips for a great interview  - Don Ray
  • the investigative mindset - Don Ray
  • interview the document - Don Ray
  • the investigative synopsis - Lars Moller
  • investigative reporting essentials (1) - Branko Cecen
  • investigative reporting essentials (2) - Branko Cecen
  • investigative reporting essentials (3) - Branko Cecen
  • investigative reporting essentials (4) - Branko Cecen

To access the modules, log in and navigate to the training resources section.

Registration for MHM is free of charge and takes seconds. If you find that some modules are locked, it's because they are still being worked on and are not ready yet.

All registered members of MHM are encouraged to submit training modules to help other users. Please use the contact us form at the foot of any page. Also, if you spot any typos or other errors in any of the modules, please let us know.

If you have any comments to make on the modules, you can add them using the comment box beneath each article.

These resources are for non-commercial use only . If you want to use the material for commercial gain you will need to seek permission of the authors (listed above and alongside each module).
